The PC user has a lot of file compressor to choose from i like the free zipgenius standard edition it can zip and unzip a lot of different format for the PC.
The mac use a program called StuffIt Expander it handles a lot of file format that you come across when downloading files like a zip file it opens them all.

My suggestions for free utilities to improve your computer Advanced SystemCare Free it is a very good for cleaning your PC. I like another utility called Glary Utilities it does the same thing as advanced system care free
but it has many other features that are good for cleaning your PC. Their is another one i like to use is called
ccleaner it is good cleaner for cleaning your internet history.

If your not sure what you need for your pc or mac look here.
If you not sure what you need for your mac computer then go to download.com go to mac section their is a download.com to the mac starter kit now their are free and not free options in the kit you have to decide for yourself click the link to see the kit MAC starter kit. A web browser for mac is the same for PC. image editor same as PC. If you like to watch DVD that you bought you can make a copy on your mac with handbrake a free DVD ripper for mac only.

If you want to write an essay and don't want to pay for Micrsoft Office use this stuff.
If you want to write an essay and don't have Microsoft word on your computer or used up the trial that came with your computer. Their are a few options you can use OpenOffice.org it is just like office except if you want to open your work in Microsoft office at school or a computer at work you must go to file save as word format. If you do not do that you will not be able to open it on a computer with office. If you do not need all the stuff with office and just need a word writer then you could use AbiWord it just a writer nothing more.
